Hi! I’m Gillian/G/Coach G/GMacSpurr, thanks for popping by my blog. Normally I blog about races or running in general, but today’s blog is slightly different. I’ve been posting regular blogs now for the past few months, so thought it would be a good idea to do a blog about me – so you know a bit more about who is writing these. AND I just realised the other day, that I am coming up to my 3 year run-iversary, so figured it was the perfect time for a trip down memory lane!
Regardless of whether you are running for fitness, for fun, or are in the midst of a training cycle, there will be days when you can’t be bothered running. It happens to us all. It could be your body’s way of telling you to slow down, or you could just be feeling lazy and needing a push out the door.
Here are some tips that I have found helped me….
I’m an over-packer. There I said it. I can’t go away for a night without a decent-sized suitcase, I take things ‘just in case’. So my hydration belt is kinda no different. You will see runners who carry nothing with them, not even a bottle of water, running care-free wherever their feet take them. Well not me, what if I’m far from home and need something?!!?
My first race-cation experience was this January at the Walt Disney World Marathon in Florida. Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely loved the race (see my previous blog post), but I’m not a fan of race-cations (yet!). Here are my positives and negatives to race-cations (yes I have only done one, but these are my thoughts on that one…..I need to do a few more before I can make a more rounded decision) – I would love to hear if you have anything extra to add to the list.

I’ve got serious runner’s envy.
I realised I was a ‘proper’ runner about a year ago. It wasn’t because I was training for a marathon, nor that I had done a 5km, 10km or a half-marathon race in my first 8 months of running. And it wasn’t after having spent hundreds of $$$ on the gear. It was feeling envious watching runners. Even on a weekend morning, after doing 20km+ runs by myself – feeling emotionally and physically drained, and completely done for the day – I would still catch sight of a runner outside, from my cocoon on the sofa, and be envious. I wanted to lace up and get out there.
I’m a planner. I have to-do-lists on top of to-do-lists, but really when it comes down to it, I’m a champion procrastinator. So when it came to planning my 29 week schedule (to PB at a 5K and half-marathon, and have a fun and safe 10K and marathon), I had it planned out in my head for weeks. One Sunday afternoon in May, I sat down and planned LSDs (Long Slow Distances), hills, speed work, weights, and November Project. It took 2 shots to get it all right (doing a 29 week plan around 4 races was tough), but I was so pumped. This year’s running was going to ROCK.
