YOU HAVE TO TRUST YOURSELF WHEN RUNNING IS NEW AND UNFAMILIAR

This past weekend I picked up a book and finished it within 24hrs! It’s been a very long time since I did that. It’s called Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad. It’s a beautiful read, very sad, but beautiful (maybe don’t read it if you are feeling at all emotional!).

This book has absolutely nothing to do with running or nutrition, so you might be wondering why I am dedicating this email to it. There is a line that I want to share with you…

“I decided to trust that what feels unknown and frightening will soon feel familiar and safe.”

Now, as I said, it has absolutely nothing to do with running, but removing it from the story I was struck with a realisation: we have to trust ourselves, when we are following what is true for us, even though in the beginning it might feel tough and shitty, it will soon feel better.

And this is so applicable to our life as a runner!

When we start something new – perhaps a new training cycle – we can feel excited and scared at the same time, because we don’t know what will happen next. But once we jump in and start running, over time we start to feel more comfortable and familiar.

It doesn’t take long for a distance/pace/run type that was previously scary to now be comfortable, easy or familiar.

When you are running, you are almost always going to be feel like you are in some way outside your comfort zone. You have to trust that you just have to keep taking steps forward, keep going, pushing past the fear and uncertainty, coz one day you’ll be able to look back and see the HUGE distance you’ve covered from today.

So if you take just one thing away from this email today, let it be trust. Trust in yourself, trust in your dreams, trust that you are capable, and trust that even when times are tough, you my friend, are tougher.

Now, I get it, trusting in yourself can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when travelling along new bumpy paths. If you are finding yourself stuck in the ‘frightening’ and unsure of the journey ahead, don’t struggle alone.

This call is completely free, we can chat about where you are currently at and how to get you feeling ‘familiar and safe’.
