What’s the book I’m recommending to new runners?
‘Running like a girl‘ by Alexandra Heminsley
I was gifted this book 12 months after I started running back in 2015. By this point I had run several races – a 5k, 10k and half-marathon . For the 5k and 10k training, I had absolutely no clue what I was doing. I didn’t know what shoes or gear to buy. I didn’t know about the run/walk method. I didn’t know about tempo, hills, intervals, or easy runs. I didn’t know about proper hydration or nutrition. I had absolutely no clue! It’s fair to say I was completely winging it – as I think a lot of people do when they initially start running (if they don’t have a coach, running group or family member/friend that is a runner that can advise them).
This book, ‘Running Like A Girl’, is a fantastic read as Alexandra herself goes through all the typical struggles, challenges, ups and downs that most runners are likely to experience in their first 12 months of running.
Although Alexandra writes about the challenges she faced as someone new to running, I still recommend this to runners who have been pounding the pavement/sidewalk for years, as it’s a fantastic reminder of how far you have come. It made me reflect back on my journey into this wonderful world of running.
